It’s no small feat to enter the Guinness World Records, but the Porsche Taycan did just that, recording the longest drift with an electric vehicle.

Dennis Retera, a Porsche instructor, effortlessly lapped the 200 meter-long drift circle 210 times- with the front wheels not once facing the same direction as the curve. The sideways expert had covered more than 42.171 kilometers in just 55 minutes with an average speed of 46 km/h, securing the world record for the longest continuous drift in an electric car. Already on sale in China, this world record was achieved with the innovative rear-wheel-drive version of the Taycan.

As explained by Retera, the electric Porsche’s powerslide are quite easy when the driving stability programs are switched off. The ease is especially highlighted with this model variant, as it is exclusively driven by the vehicle’s rear wheels. She continues on to praise the Porsche’s features, mentioning how “the low center of gravity and the long wheelbase ensure stability.” The precise design of the steering and chassis, she goes on, “allows for perfect control at all times, even when moving sideways.”

Taking place under the supervision of Guinness World Records official record judge Joanne Brent, the attempt was made on the  PEC’s irrigated driving dynamics area. While Brent has been supervising all different kinds of record attempts for the past five years, he was very impressed with the vehicle’s performance, stating that “Porsche has done real pioneering work.”

To accurately document the record, a wide range of technical aids were incorporated in the process, including a local land surveyor that measured the Porsche Experience Centre’s 80-meter diameter area with careful millimeter precision. Yaw rate sensors and GPS within the vehicle, along with a camera installed on the roof of the track’s control tower were used for documentation purposes.

Entering a new era in 2019, Porsche’s first all-electric Taycan sports car is continuing its expansion into the field of electric mobility.
