Porsche Engineering has created a new and effective AI-based method for providing even more precise forecasting of the remaining range — essentially providing a continuous health check on batteries.
Currently, lithium-ion batteries are the preferred energy storage technology for electric vehicles. This is due to their high power density and energy. Unfortunately, their properties inevitably change throughout the course of a vehicle’s life. That’s why for drivers of electric vehicles, it is imperative to have access to information on the current state of the battery. With that information, the estimation of the remaining range at its specific state can be precisely estimated.
The most important indicator of the condition of a battery is its internal resistance. That’s why the Porsche batteries are designed with sensors that regularly determine the voltage of individual battery cells, the current intensity, and the temperature of cell groups at short intervals.
For maximum indication of a vehicle’s internal resistance, the developers of Porsche are relying on artificial intelligence (AI). They first measure the internal resistance of the battery under specific conditions, with a determined correction factor to make calculations of the internal resistance of the battery very precisely.
Data from a fleet of test vehicles are provided for further valuable input.
“All this data also includes influences that we were previously unable to take into account,” says Jiri Valtr, Porsche Engineering Prague. This includes the driving style, number of charging and discharging cycles already carried out, outside temperatures, and more. AI is capable of taking into account all different kinds of new influences, providing highly comprehensive information about the state of health of the battery. For example, vehicle manufacturers can evaluate temperature curves in the batteries and use that information to carefully determine the condition of entire vehicle fleets, proving highly accurate and efficient.
In about two years, customers should be able to benefit from this new range calculation function. Following that, it will gradually be integrated into various other vehicle models.
