Setting another level of dedication to be CO2 -neutral across the whole value chain by 2030, Porsche is asking its suppliers to commit to exclusively using certified green energy in manufacturing car components.
Currently, 20% of Porsche’s total greenhouse gas emissions are produced by the sports car manufacturer’s supply chain. This figure is expected to rise to around 40% by 2030 because of the ongoing electrification of vehicles. But you can be assured that Porsche is resolving this issue head on.
Since 2020, the company’s battery cell suppliers have already been using green energy. Now is the time to take the next important step—to let series suppliers jump on the bandwagon. Plans to have intensive talks with partners so as to drive improvements in sustainability efforts further are within the pipeline.
The company has around 1,300 series suppliers. If they’ll comply, they’re going to greatly contribute to carbon neutrality goals. Otherwise, those who are unwilling will no longer be considered for contracts with the automaker in the future.
“It is only by working together that we will be able to combat ongoing global climate change,” explained Uwe-Karsten Städter, Member of the Executive Board for Procurement at Porsche AG.
Taking the lead, in terms of operations, large Porsche sites are already carbon-neutral. In the Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart, the production of the Taycan, the first all-electric sports car in the has been carbon-neutral since 2019. The production of the 911, 718, and all vehicles made at the company’s headquarters have attained the carbon-neutral status, as well. Plants in Leipzig and Weissach where the Macan and Panamera models are produced, followed suit early this year.
At the beginning of March, Porsche reached another milestone with the world-premiere of the Taycan Cross Turismo—where the all-rounder among electric sports cars became the first ever vehicle in the world to be carbon-neutral during its service life. Expect more models to follow soon.
Over the next ten years, decarbonization will be one of the automaker's priorities with an allotted investment of more than a billion euros. Porsche’s commitment in achieving sustainability is something you can count on.
