Extraordinary is what happened when the talented sneaker designer and influencer Sean Wotherspoon worked hand-in-hand with Porsche to create a mind-blowing design for his very own Taycan 4 Cross Turismo.
From the exterior to the interior, everything about it is worthy of attention.
The Exterior in Bold Color Blocking Style
The vibrant Ashley Green, Loretta Purple, Sean Peach, Nash Blue colors create a striking exterior in a color block style that is unlike any other. Each color was meticulously created, and made to contrast and highlight one another at the same time to show off the Taycan’s natural curves more. (Fun Fact: Sean named the paints after his family members.)
“Art cars suit Porsche very well,” Robert Ader, Porsche’s Chief Marketing Officer remarked. Creative, collaborative works with artists motivate and inspire them to keep “developing the brand without changing it fundamentally.”
The final product embodies what Sean is known for as a designer—trendy streetwear with a mix of vivid colors and unusual materials.
The Unique Interior
The vibrant color blocking continues in the car’s interior. Sean utilized corduroy and cork, which he uses for his streetwear, as well—giving the car more distinctive features. You’ll find cork on the steering wheel, dashboard, and center console. Working with cork, however, posed challenges to Porsche’s trimmers. The laminated material has to be fitted to intricate shapes such as the dashboard. Nonetheless, the end result is outstanding.
Corduroy adorns the seat centers, sun visors, and roof lining in Atacama Beige.
As a staunch vegan, Wotherspoon wanted the car to be leather-free; Taycan customers can also select this option.
The Making of the Art Car
This partnership was initiated by Porsche’s marketing communications team. Ultimately, Sean, who is best known for the Nike Air Max 97/1 sneaker he created in 2018, was brought together with the Style Porsche designers. They organized the world premiere of the car on Instagram. Using virtual reality technology, different color options were discussed and tried out on a model car. The sneaker designer also dropped by the Porsche Design Studio in Weissach a couple of times to oversee the development of his art car onsite.
A visit to the Porsche Museum ignited Sean’s idea for circular elements on the doors. This represents Porsche’s race history dating back to the 1950s Le Mans.
Additional Customization Through the Special Request Program
The Taycan 4 Cross Turismo art car features components from the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur such as the 21-inch Cross Turismo Design wheels and a rear wiper cover that are painted in high-gloss black, and a light strip with the Porsche logo in black.
Customers can opt for comparable projects within the Sonderwunsch programme, a special factory request program. Among others, the Paint to Sample Plus option to provide four external color-coded Wotherspoon paints is underway.
Wotherspoon shared that when he looks at something, he examines how he can change and elevate it to a new level.
“It doesn’t matter whether I’m working on a sneaker or car design, a workflow, sustainability topics or a new material. Striving for innovation drives me and I was fascinated from the start by the unusual materials that the Porsche designers in Weissach work with. We inspired each other again and again throughout the project and ultimately created a completely new type of vehicle design,” he said.
Great things happen when you step out of the ordinary.
