In a momentous celebration, employees at the Porsche factory in Leipzig, Saxony, are rejoicing as the two-millionth Porsche car rolled off the production line. This significant achievement was marked by the completion of a Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid in the elegant Madeira Gold Metallic, destined for a customer in Dubai.
The Panamera model line, in operation at the Leipzig location since 2009, has played a pivotal role in the success story of Porsche's Leipzig facility. Gerd Rupp, Chairman of the Management Board of Porsche Leipzig GmbH, emphasized the close connection between the success of the location and the Panamera model, noting that both represent growth and change.
The milestone Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid underwent meticulous stages of production, from the body shop to the paint shop and assembly line, showcasing the precision and craftsmanship synonymous with Porsche's high-performance vehicles. The car even made an appearance on the FIA-certified on-road circuit in Leipzig, symbolizing the culmination of a remarkable journey.
The production history of the Panamera is intertwined with the growth of the Leipzig facility. Initially built and painted within the Porsche Group from 2009, the assembly plant transformed into a full factory in 2016, solidifying the Panamera's identity as a 'true Leipziger.' Gerd Rupp highlighted the expansion to a full factory as a groundbreaking decision, allowing the manufacture of models from the construction of the body to the final assembly.
As an economic driver and employer in the central German region, the Porsche factory in Leipzig boasts a workforce of over 4,400 people. Rupp credited the commitment of the employees as the biggest success factor, enabling the factory to overcome various challenges. The facility has evolved into a center of expertise for electromobility, with plans to manufacture three types of powertrains – combustion, electric, and hybrid drives — flexibly on a single line.
The Leipzig factory's success extends beyond production numbers, garnering multiple awards for its innovative approaches. Recognized for its 'smart factory' initiatives, the facility has prepared for the future by adopting intelligent, digital, and connected processes. Sustainability is a core aspect of the factory's strategy, with a vision of achieving a Zero Impact Factory – a production process that leaves no ecological footprint. Awards, including the Platinum rating from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and the Lean & Green Management Award 2021, underscore the factory's commitment to excellence. The most recent accolade, the Factory of the Year award for 2023, further solidifies the Porsche factory in Leipzig as an industry leader, recognized on an international level.
